FAQ

  • Lightweight aggregate is a key ingredient in lightweight concrete that replaces traditional, heavier aggregates like gravel. Lightweight aggregates are either natural (e.g., pumice, light sand, etc.) or synthetic (e.g., expanded clay, shale, etc.) and their raw materials are excavated from quarry sites.

  • The porous structure of lightweight aggregate makes it less dense than normal aggregates, which can make concrete lighter and more workable. It is used primarily in structural applications and provides benefits such as improved insulation, weight reduction, and a longer lifetime.

  • Lightweight aggregates often have dry loose bulk densities of less than 1200kg/m3, while normal weight aggregates have bulk densities up to 1760kg/m3. Due to its unique chemical composition, SusMaX’s LWA has a bulk density of 769 kg/m3.

  • SusMaX has developed a proprietary thermochemical process that allows us to manufacture lightweight aggregate from 97% recycled waste coal ash. This allows us to manufacture our LWA near any coal ash landfill instead of being limited to large-scale quarries and excavation sites.

  • SusMaX’s sustainably sourced lightweight aggregate is 20% stronger and lighter compared to market alternatives. This increases the strength, durability, and total lifetime of lightweight concrete made with our LWA.

  • SusMaX has three different patents on the proprietary thermochemical process and manufacturing methods used to convert waste coal ash to lightweight aggregate.
